Yesterday was an amazing time! Seriously, I think the French think we are completely crazy by now, but it is so worth it. We celebrated Carnival/Mardi Gras.
Viany is from Barranquilla, the city of Carnaval (Carnival in Spanish). We have heard this so many times since coming to France, and this past weekend was Carnaval and she was missing it like mad, so of course, we had to celebrate it with her!! We tried to invite a bunch of people, but it seems like some people are ignoring us or something, but the people who did join us were awesome. It was us five, bien sur, plus our new friend Sophie and Guy's tennis coach.
Viany made us a wonderful dinner of Chinese rice with chicken, pork, and vegetables. We sat around chatting for a long time. Sophie speaks amazing English and Guy's coach is just plain hilarious. We went out to the bar for a bit to meet up with some other people and the fun just continued.
Once back at the apartment, Viany started pouring corn starch into our hands. We were like "Vainy, qu'est-ce que c'est?" (What's this for?), she kept telling us that we'd see. She made us all stand in a circle and before we knew it, she shouted "Maintenant on commence la guerre!" (Now, we start the war) and threw her corn starch at someone. Before long, we were all covered in the stuff. Even Sophie and Guy's coach got into it. It was great! And of course, some of the neighbors walked in mid war. God only knows what they think of us. I took a couple of photos of the aftermath, but for the most part, Sophie was the one who took all the photos. I don't know if she'd be okay with me sharing those photos, so for now, I'll just share mine.
